Exploring emergent forms of movement and sound:

The first flyer for Sentient Rhythms

This is the first flyer for Sentient Rhythms, a new Ecstatic Dance class I’m facilitating in Prescott Arizona. I decided to go with this name to avoid confusion with other Ecstatic Dance classes, and to leave room to evolve our own direction.

This class is also a final project for a course I’m taking through Prescott College on the therapeutic use of dance, which is being taught by Sarah Edwards, a local counseling psychologist and Ecstatic Dance facilitator. The idea I had proposed to Sarah was to emphasize a specific rhythm from Gabriel Roth’s 5 Rhythms teachings for each of the first five classes. Each class will contain all five rhythms (and more), but I will aim to emphasize the characteristics of the particular rhythm of the day throughout the class. It is important to point out that I am not teaching 5 Rhythms, or practicing them in a specific way, rather I am integrating my research, and experience of the rhythms, into what I hope will be a unique and powerful dance music experience.

Below are the first five dates as they correspond to Gabriel Roth’s 5 rhythms:

Flowing (April 18th)

Staccato (April 25th)

Chaos (May 2nd)

Lyrical (May 9th)

Stillness (May 16th)

I will be posting some reflections on Gabriel Roth’s 5 rhythms when I get a chance.

  1. Thank you for incorporating my articles and blog, Foot Notes on the Dance Path, in your site. May it serve as an inspiration for your community in Arizona! Sounds like you are a juicy bunch.

James Rustin was really enjoyed your Ecstatic Dance events. Do you have anything scheduled for the end of this month or for January?

    Thanks,
